A Study on the Effect of Korean Traditional Music Therapy with on Depression and Quality of Life of the Elderly with Mild Dementia

|
This study is to examine the effects of group music therapy with Korean traditional music on depression and quality of life of the elderly with mild dementia. The subjects of this study were 20 elderly people with mild dementia who reside in G Welfare Foundation in D city. Ten of them were randomly assigned to experimental group and the other ten people were assigned to control group respectively. This program was carried out during 16 sessions for 40 minutes per session twice a week for 8 weeks from September 24, 2012 to November 15, 2012. Before and after this program, SGDS-K(Korean version of Short Geriatric Depression Scale) and LSI-Z(Life Satisfaction Index-Z)were carried out for the two groups. And then the test results were analyzed by SPSS WIN 17.0. It was found out that there was a significant reduction(p<.05) in the depression of the elderly with dementia and a significant improvement(p<.05) in the quality of life of the elderly with mid dementia. Therefore, it is possible to say that this group music therapy with Korean traditional music is effective in the reduction of depression and also in the improvement of quality of life of the elderly with mild dementia.
